We've recently completed 3 WirelessU courses -- Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Thailand. Each one deserves a news article, but I'll just post some of bits from the Thailand class.
It was held at AIT, and taught by Onno Purbo and his team from Indonesia. http://www.interlab.ait.ac.th/training/2009/wireless_internet_ws.html is the course announcement. http://www.detikinet.com/read/2009/10/14/110858/1221094/398/ajaran-wajanbolic-teobolic-menyebar-ke-negara-tetangga is the press coverage, in Indonesian. Google translates its reasonably understandably: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.detikinet.com%2Fread%2F2009%2F10%2F14%2F110858%2F1221094%2F398%2Fajaran-wajanbolic-teobolic-menyebar-ke-negara-tetangga+&sl=id&tl=en&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

Several of us met in Trieste duiring the annual ICTP Wireless school. The primary work was to agree upon curriculum for 3-day, 5-day, and 10-day courses. Secondly, we discussed several upcoming potential WirelessU training events. I thought I'd update you all on these activities, and ask for your help. Sebastian Buetrich, Marco Zennaro, Carlo Fonda, Rob Flickenger, Ermanno Pietrosemoli, Steve Okay, and I met and discussed the curriculum. Rob will updates the wirelesu.org web site to reflect this; the raw notes are attached. For each of the 3 courses, there will be a one-page overview with lists of topic, and pointers to the recommended course units. Comments on the general idea and/or details are welcome. Secondly, Steve Huter has had some discussions over the last several months with the Internet Society (isoc.org), about offering WirelessU courses in several different locations through local chapters. ISOC has outreach, training, and improving access to the Internet as part of it's mission. For several years they have been helping organize and support training workshops (with a lot of help from Steve Huter's organization, nsrc.org, which has a long history of this sort of work, at AfNOG, SANOG, PacNOG, etc. meetings). So we'll be working with ISOC and NSRC to make these workshops happen, in Nepal, Benin, and Fiji.

If you're already a registered member, you may have noticed that your profile has an empty field: Country. To add your country (now a required field upon registration) to your profile go to "My Account" --> "Edit" --> "Bio" and select your country from the pull-down menu. We've included everybody! Also, when you visit the WirelessU Members page, you now have the option of viewing all the members by a list. List view allows you to sort members by name, country, or date. Lastly, the members list viewing permissions have also changed: Only authenticated (logged-in) users may view the Members page. |

Today Rob Flickenger and Steve Okay presented a paper on Very Long Distance WiFi Networks at NSDR 2008 (a SIGCOMM 2008 workshop). The paper was co-authored by Carlo Fonda, Ermanno Pietrosemoli, and Marco Zennaro, and detailed their experiences with very long distance (100 km or greater) wireless links. |
